Water Governance and Sustainability

Strengthening Community-based Management for the Sustainability of Rural Water Services

Access to safe and reliable water remains a major challenge for many rural communities. Although governments and development partners have invested significantly in rural water infrastructure over the years, many water facilities continue to become partially functional or completely broken due to weak management systems, poor maintenance culture, and limited community ownership.

The Strengthening Community-Based Management for the Sustainability of Rural Water Services project is an initiative by the Vulnerable Aid Organization aimed at addressing these challenges by strengthening local water governance systems and promoting sustainable community ownership of rural water facilities.

The project recognizes that sustainable water services require more than infrastructure alone. Effective operation and maintenance of water systems depend on strong community participation, accountability, transparent leadership, and active Water and Sanitation Management Teams (WSMTs). Through this initiative, VAO works closely with communities, local authorities, and stakeholders to rethink and strengthen the Community-Based Management (CBM) approach introduced to empower communities to manage their own water resources.

  • Our approach focuses on:
  • Strengthening community water governance structures;
  • Building the capacity of Water and Sanitation Management Teams;
  • Promoting accountability and transparency in water management;
  • Encouraging community ownership and participation;
  • Supporting sustainable operation and maintenance systems;
  • Conducting community engagements, research, and advocacy on rural water sustainability.

Construction of Vocational Training Center

The Vulnerable Aid Organization is currently undertaking the construction of a Vocational Training Center in Brewaniase to create opportunities for skills development, empowerment, and sustainable livelihoods for vulnerable individuals and young people within the community.

The project is aimed at addressing unemployment and economic hardship by providing practical vocational training that equips beneficiaries with employable and entrepreneurial skills. When completed, the center will serve as a safe and supportive learning environment where young people, women, and vulnerable groups can acquire hands-on training to improve their future prospects and contribute meaningfully to community development.

The construction project is being funded by the Hendrik van Dijk Fonds, whose support continues to play a significant role in helping VAO expand opportunities for vulnerable communities.
